Sound studio

The sound levels which are produced in a sound studio/exercise space can be of such a high level that they must be isolated to keep it quiet for the neighbours. There are two possibilities to damp the noise:

Sound cabins

You get the best sound isolation with a Merford Sound Cabin. A common sound cabin in a room with a two brick wall and concrete floor will mostly insulate the noise level to the level of a whisper. In combination with a wooden floor and thin walls, good insulation is also achieved.

'Room in a room'

The creation of a room in the room (a space which is completely de-coupled from the original space) is a very good solution. This will absorb the noise to a large degree.

This you do by setting up the floor and ceiling and the partitions completely vibration free. For the partitions and the ceilings you can use Merfoflex. This is a pre-made partition/pre-made ceiling that is placed sufficiently vibration free from the walls and the ground. With this you get much higher noise insulation values than by the placing of a fixed pre-made partition.

For the floating floor you lay the Agglomer plates (floating floor, 30mm thick) directly on the building floor. Above this there are 2 Multiplex layers. These must be connected to each other (glued and/or screwed), with the seams staggered facing downwards. These plates of Multiplex can't have any direct contact with the existing floor and partition; for that a contact bridge is inserted.

To connect the contract bridge with the partition you can make use of Agglomer (Stripes). The finished floor /carpet can then be laid over the Multiplex plates.

Faulty Application: Burl foam

The placing of absorbing material on the walls and ceiling has limited effect on the sound insulation. Absorbent materials improve the acoustic within the space; the radiation of sound to surrounding spaces is only minimally reduced.

In practice many sound studios make use of the so-call "egg-box-foam" (Merfocell Burlfoam). The choice of "egg-box foam" is purely on an aesthetic basis: many people find this prettier" than the most effective and acoustically superior plain foam (such as Merfocell PU en Tecnocell).

When you apply Burlfoam we advise you to choose Burlfoam with a thickness of 50mm; this has the biggest volume and therefore the best result. This model is available as self-adhesive as well as non-adhesive.
